Public Information

In his report to the General Assembly on the Extraordinary Chambers in the Courts of Cambodia, the Secretary-General highlighted expectations of the Government of Cambodia and of the international community that the Khmer Rouge trials will contribute substantially to national reconciliation in Cambodia. It was also noted that strong media interest, both nationally and internationally was to be anticipated. The concept of operations for the court therefore envisaged public outreach and media activities as an integral part of the Extraordinary Chambers. To support this goal a dedicated public affairs section, supported by UNAKRT, now works hand in hand with the Government, media and NGOs to achieve the widest possible coverage.

UNAKRT supports the public affairs section of the Extraordinary Chambers in bringing information about the court to the people of Cambodia. The court facilities have been visited by 1000's of rural Cambodians who have then returned to their homes and spread the word about the ECCC. Members of the public affairs section also take part in public forums and conferences throughout the country as well as facilitating the participation of other court officials. A full list of current outreach activities and an archive of all public affairs outreach can be seen on the ECCC website at (http://www.eccc.gov.kh/english/outreach.aspx).

UNAKRT supports the public affairs section of the Extraordinary Chambers by contributing to the design and funding of public information products. Booklets posters, stickers and radio spots are just some of the products that are currently being used to raise awareness and promote the work of the ECCC. To see a full list and downloadable versions of ECCC public information products visit the ECCC website at: (http://www.eccc.gov.kh/english/publications.book.aspx)

Audio and video records of the trial chamber hearings will be created by the ECCC's Court Management Section. These records will be provided to all Cambodian media organizations and civil society groups at through the Public Affairs Section at no charge. UNAKRT will support the Public Affairs Section in creating Audio and Video 'wrap ups' on a regular basis. These will be aired and distributed through out rural Cambodia to ensure that every village has an opportunity to keep up to date on the courts progress. (Coming soon)

The independent website Cambodian Trial Monitor is now hosting streaming video of the entire public roceedings of the ECCC. The video can be viewed here. (Note- Cambodian Trial Monitor is not an official UN site and is not maintained by UNAKRT. Any questions regarding its content should be directed to the contact information listed on the site.)

The Extraordinary Chambers has received extensive coverage in the intentional media. Some examples of the developing story of the ECCC are provided below.
