ANNOUNCEMENT FOR A CONSULTANT (INTERNATIONAL)
The United Nations Assistance to the Khmer Rouge Trials (UNAKRT) provides technical assistance to the Extraordinary Chambers in the Courts of Cambodia (ECCC) which is a domestic court established in accordance with Cambodian law. The ECCC has jurisdiction to bring to trial senior leaders of Democratic Kampuchea and those who were most responsible for the crimes and serious violations of Cambodian penal law, international humanitarian law and custom that were committed during the period from 17 April 1975 to 6 January 1979. A feature of the proceedings is inclusion of Civil Parties allowing Victims to participate by supporting the prosecution and to seek specific forms of reparation.

The United Nations Assistance to the Khmer Rouge Trials is recruiting a Translator: English - Thai (Consultant).

Duties and Responsibilities
Under the supervision of the Coordinator, ITU, the incumbent will be responsible for translating from English into Thai, without revision, mainly legal correspondence covering a broad range of subjects dealt with by the ECCC, particularly those subjects requiring experience, recognized proficiency and/or a short turn-around time.

Competencies
Excellent translating and writing skills; high standard of accuracy, consistency and faithfulness to the spirit, intent, style and nuances of the original text with a good grasp of the subject matter. Knowledge and mastery of legal translation and subjects dealt with by the ECCC. Knowledge and mastery of Thai drafting style and usage. Ability to use all sources of reference, consultation and information relevant to the text at hand. Ability to work under pressure and maintain adequate speed and volume of output observing deadlines.

Qualifications

• Advanced university degree in translation, modern languages, law or a related field or an equivalent diploma.
• Confirmed experience in translation/revision from English into Thai. Experience in translation for the United Nations or other international organization would be considered an asset.
• Fluency in written and spoken Thai.
• Good knowledge of relevant computer applications, ability to type in both English and Thai.
