The United Nations Assistance to the Khmer Rouge Trials (UNAKRT) provides technical assistance to the Extraordinary Chambers in the Courts of Cambodia (ECCC) which is a domestic court established in accordance with Cambodian law. The ECCC has jurisdiction to bring to trial senior leaders of Democratic Kampuchea and those who were most responsible for the crimes and serious violations of Cambodian penal law, international humanitarian law and custom that were committed during the period from 17 April 1975 to 6 January 1979. A feature of the proceedings is inclusion of Civil Parties allowing Victims to participate by supporting the prosecution and to seek specific forms of reparation.

The United Nations Assistance to the Khmer Rouge Trials is seeking translators who will work on a consultancy basis to translate documents from Khmer into English and English into Khmer.

Duties and Responsibilities
The translators will be working under the direct supervision of a Chamber or judicial office and will be responsible for translating a variety of texts, mostly legal documents such as evidence, legal submissions, decisions and orders from Khmer to English and/or from English to Khmer. They must aim at a high standard of accuracy, consistency and faithfulness to the spirit, style and nuances of the original; observe the
established terminology and usage; ensure, as far as possible, consistency with other
translations produced in the ECCC.

Remuneration
The consultant will be paid upon certified satisfactory delivery as follows:

Translations from Khmer into English: US$0.08 per translated word into English
Translations from English into Khmer: US$15 per page translated into Khmer (1 page in Khmer equals 1,500 characters without space)

Qualifications

Education: University degree in translation, linguistics, modern languages, law or a related field or an equivalent diploma.

Experience: A minimum of five years of experience in translation or revision from English into Khmer or Khmer into English. Experience with legal translation is an asset. Professional, academic work in the field of linguistics may be accepted in lieu of translation experience.
